The best manhwa school story is Weak Hero, because it treats a high school the way a crime drama treats a city: everyone knows who runs it, and the hero is the one kid who won't play along. The other nine picks use the school the same way, as a closed, ranked world nobody can leave, whether the story is a romance, a fight series or a thriller.
Pick if you want:
- Fights that cost something: Weak Hero.
- A school romance that's finished: True Beauty.
- A school story that's really a thriller: Bastard.
- Something new and unsettling: I Dare You.
- Class and money at an elite school: Proof of Dignity.
- A magic academy with a second chance: A Returner's Magic Should Be Special.
How we picked: the school has to drive the plot, not just sit in the background. If you came looking for a manhwa with school hierarchy and social ranking, every pick here qualifies. This October we dropped Unholy Blood (the school is one arc) and Nevertheless (the art school shapes the characters more than the story) and added two WEBTOON series from 2025 and 2026 that put the classroom at the center.

Best manhwa school fights: hierarchy and bullies
Weak Hero
Weak Hero by SEOPASS and RAZEN. Cover via AniList.
The best school manhwa. Start here.
WEBTOON, completed. 268 chapters, May 2018 to October 2023.
WEBTOON's pitch is blunt: the school "is run by tyrants whose favorite hobby is tormenting the weakest kids in class. But then Gray arrived." Gray (Si-Eun Yeon on AniList) is small, quiet and new, and his calculated, brutal fighting leaves the school's toughest bullies scrambling. Every fight matters because you already know who's protected and who isn't. Readers come back to it for exactly that: one r/manhwa poster who had finished Viral Hit, Lookism and Weak Hero wanted more of "the weak guy who fights in school and becomes stronger." Our Weak Hero review covers the full run.
Read it if you want school violence treated seriously. Skip it if you want the fights to be fun.
Lookism
Lookism by Taejun Pak. Cover via AniList.
The best long-runner, though it outgrew the classroom years ago.
WEBTOON. Episode 617 went up October 10, 2026. Updates every Sunday, with three more episodes in the app.
Daniel Park, an unattractive loner, wakes up in a second body: tall, handsome and cooler than ever. He gets to see the same school from both sides, and the social commentary lives in that structure. The early school arcs are the point of this list; recent arcs carry titles like "Gapryong Kim" and have moved well past homeroom. Netflix's animated series (Studio Mir, 8 episodes) premiered December 8, 2022:
Netflix's official trailer for the Lookism animated series. Video: Netflix on YouTube.
Read it if you want a huge weekly series that starts as a sharp school story. Skip it if six hundred-plus episodes is a commitment you won't make. More picks are in our manhwa like Lookism guide.
The God of High School
The God of High School by Yongje Park. Cover via AniList.
The best-drawn school fights, until gods show up.
WEBTOON, completed. 569 chapters, April 2011 to October 2022. MAPPA's 13-episode anime premiered in July 2020.
Mori Jin, a taekwondo kid, enters a tournament that promises the winner anything they want, and it turns out to be part of a much larger plot. The early tournament arcs are where the fight choreography is at its best. After that, the school is mostly a memory.
Read it if you want fight choreography first. Skip it if you want the story to stay in school. See our review.
Study Group
Study Group by Shin Hyungwuk and Ryu Seungyeon. Korean volume 1 cover via AniList.
The lightest pick: a fight series about wanting to study.
WEBTOON. Season 3 Episode 23 went up October 10, 2026. Updates every Sunday; 82 more episodes are app-only.
Yusung Technical High is nicknamed the "school for future criminals." Gamin just wants to get into university. Rejected by every study group, he starts his own, and the gap between hitting the books and hitting people is the running joke. Our Study Group review and reading guide have more.
Read it if you want school fights with a lighter tone. Skip it if you want something finished.
Best manhwa school romance
True Beauty
True Beauty by Yaongyi. Cover via AniList.
The best school romance, and finished.
WEBTOON, completed. 257 chapters including a prologue and 33 side stories, April 2018 to April 2023.
A shy comic fan learns makeup from beauty videos and becomes her school's prettiest girl overnight. The catch is keeping her real face secret, especially from the one boy who already knows it. The school is what makes it work: popularity runs on looks, so one makeover changes her whole position by morning. Our True Beauty review goes deeper, and the best romance manhwa list has more.
Read it if you want a long, warm high-school romance. Skip it if love triangles exhaust you.
Cheese in the Trap
Cheese in the Trap by Soonkki. Season 3 cover via AniList.
A college-set romance that keeps you uneasy.
WEBTOON, completed. Four seasons of 47, 67, 108 and 77 chapters. tvN adapted it as a 16-episode drama in 2016.
Model student Seol Hong comes back to college after a break and gets tangled up with Jung Yoo, the senior everyone calls Mr. Perfect. She starts to wonder whether he's turning her life upside down on purpose. That doubt runs the whole series.
Read it if you want romance as a character study. Skip it if you need to know the love interest is safe.
Psychological and thriller
Bastard
Bastard by Carnby Kim and Youngchan Hwang. Korean volume 1 cover via AniList.
The darkest school story here, and short.
WEBTOON, completed. 94 chapters including one extra, July 2014 to March 2017.
Seon Jin is sickly and invisible to everyone except the bullies. He also lives with a serial killer: his father. There's no safe room anywhere in his life, not in class and not at home, and the school is half of that cage. The same pair later made Sweet Home. See our psychological thriller list.
Read it if you want a thriller you can finish in a weekend. Skip it if domestic violence is a hard no.
I Dare You
I Dare You by Bong-Su and Dai. Cover via AniList.
The best new school manhwa of 2026.
WEBTOON. Launched May 12, 2026; Episode 31 went up October 12. Updates every Tuesday, with ten more episodes in the app.
Sa-Rang Yu, a second-year, has never fit in. She isn't exactly bullied, but her classmates keep pushing the dares from their humiliation games onto her, and everyone senses something off about her. As the games turn darker, the question flips: is she the victim, or the twisted one everyone suspects?
Read it if you like stories where you can't trust the lead. Skip it if bullying content is hard for you.
Proof of Dignity
Proof of Dignity by Jeongnok and Yeommil. Cover via AniList.
The class-war school story.
WEBTOON. Launched July 18, 2025; Season 1 ended with Episode 66 and an afterword on October 2, 2026. WEBTOON says it will return.
Geon-Yeong is brilliant and poor, and her grades get her into prestigious Pyeonghyeon High, where everyone else has expensive tutors. She wants to become a judge, and she has to out-compete classmates who were born ahead of her. The school is the class system in miniature.
Read it if you want ambition and money as the antagonists. Skip it if you want a finished story right now.
Academy fantasy
A Returner's Magic Should Be Special
A Returner's Magic Should Be Special by Usonan and Wookjakga. Cover via AniList.
The best magic-academy pick.
Tappytoon, completed at 268 chapters and rated 16+, with the first three episodes free. Yen Press publishes it in print.
After a ten-year war in the Shadow Labyrinth, Desir Herrman is one of the last magicians standing. At the end, he's sent back thirteen years to his first days at Hebrion Academy. The academy arc carries the early chapters, and his memory of the war gives every classroom rivalry weight. Our reading guide has the pacing.
Read it if you want school plus regression. Skip it if you want a grounded, real-world school.
Our take
Read Weak Hero first. It's the clearest case of what this list is about: the school as a system, and a kid who breaks it. Then pick by mood: True Beauty if you want warmth, Bastard if you want dread. Of the two new picks, I Dare You is the one we'd follow weekly, because it's the only story here that makes you doubt the lead.
For the brawler side of the genre, where school survival is literal, Get Schooled and Viral Hit commit harder than anything above.

Statuses, episode numbers and schedules come from each series' official WEBTOON or Tappytoon page, checked October 14, 2026, with chapter totals, dates and credits from AniList, Yen Press for the print editions, and Wikipedia for the Cheese in the Trap drama.
