ChapterBrief · Manhwa
The best romance manhwa sorted by flavor: slow burn, identity-driven stories, fantasy settings, and school drama with real stakes. No filler.

The best romance manhwa are sorted here by what they actually feel like to read, not by a score or a popularity chart. I've gone through a lot in the past few years, enough to know that treating "romance manhwa" as a single category produces useless lists. Slow burn is a different reading experience than school rom-com, and fantasy romance sits in a third place entirely.
So I sorted this list by what kind of romance you're actually getting, not by a score out of ten. Eight picks, each verified for chapter count, platform, and current status, because nothing is worse than getting 40 chapters into something and discovering it's been on hiatus since 2022.
TL;DR: The best romance manhwa sorted by flavor: slow burn, identity-driven stories, fantasy settings, and school drama with real stakes. No filler.
This isn't a prestige ranking. It's a practical guide to finding the right best romance manhwa for where you are right now. Some of these run 400+ episodes. Some wrap in 93 chapters and leave you emotionally satisfied. Some are ongoing but have enough accumulated content to be worth the commitment.
I've focused on het romance. If you want BL recommendations, that list is separate (and already published). No shonen romance detours either. Everything here has the romance front and center.
One note on sources: I Love Yoo is the one uncertain entry on this list. It's on here because nothing else currently pulls off what it does in terms of emotional writing, but the hiatus situation is real and you should know about it before starting.

These are the series where the confession is not the point. The whole story is everything leading up to it, including the false starts, the almost-moments, and the chapters where they're in the same room and absolutely cannot talk about it.
I Love Yoo follows Shin-Ae Yoo, a girl who actively avoids human connection after a painful past, and the Hirahara brothers who pull her into their lives against her will. The romance is slow in the truest sense, not because the story is padding, but because Shin-Ae's emotional architecture genuinely makes fast attachment impossible.
The writing is the reason this series has a following. Quimchee handles interiority better than almost any other webtoon creator. Shin-Ae's internal narration is specific and funny in a way that never becomes quirky-for-quirky's-sake. The pining in this one isn't about who she likes. It's about whether she can let herself like anyone at all.
The hiatus is real. Quimchee has stepped away for health reasons multiple times over the series' run, and as of 2026 the series doesn't have an active update schedule. A physical Volume 1 (WEBTOON Unscrolled) was announced for 2026, so the series is not abandoned. If you start it, you will reach the current endpoint and wait.
Worth it. Just know what you're getting into.

Love Revolution ran for nearly a decade on Naver (September 2013 to April 2023, over 430 episodes), and it started as a gag romance about a boy confessing at first sight and the girl not particularly caring. By Season 3 it had become something closer to a psychological drama about insecurity, emotional avoidance, and what people do to each other when they're afraid.
The slow burn here is architectural: the series accumulated 4 billion views globally in large part because 232 kept finding new angles on the same two characters instead of resolving them and moving on. The art improved dramatically across the run. The tonal shift will frustrate readers who want the early gag-comedy energy to continue, but the later seasons are more emotionally precise.
This is completed. 430+ episodes means real commitment, but it's done and you can binge the end without waiting.
Platform: Naver WEBTOON | Status: Completed April 2023
True Beauty completed in 2023 after 216 episodes. The school setting and identity conflict remain its defining elements.
The best romance manhwa in this category uses the central relationship as a lens for how the protagonist sees themselves: their worth, their body, their past. The romance is real, but it's always doing double duty.
True Beauty cover.
117 episodes across three seasons, completed 2023. True Beauty follows Jugyeong Lim, who masters makeup after years of bullying for her appearance and reinvents herself at a new school, where she meets two boys, one of whom discovers her without her makeup almost immediately.
The hook is simple but Yaongyi keeps it running longer than it should logically last because the series is genuinely interested in what Jugyeong wants, not just who she'll pick. The love triangle is the obvious surface story. What's underneath it is a long, occasionally clumsy exploration of why she started wearing makeup in the first place and what it means that she can't stop.
Season 2 is where the series gets more complicated: the beauty-as-armor theme gets pushed aside for relationship drama that some readers find more satisfying, others find less focused. Either way, it's done, it has a K-drama adaptation (2020-2021), and 6.6 million subscribers by 2022 is not an accident.

Platform: WEBTOON | Status: Completed, 117 episodes
My Id Is Gangnam Beauty cover.
Kang Mirae gets plastic surgery before university, not for a love interest, but because she wants to walk through a door without being stared at. What My ID is Gangnam Beauty does differently from True Beauty is that it keeps the stakes grounded in social perception rather than a love triangle. The romance with Kyungseok develops on the side of a larger question about what it means to be treated as a "Gangnam beauty," someone whose looks get attributed to surgery and therefore dismissed.
The series ran on Naver in 2016 and the English translation concluded in 2021. It's shorter than True Beauty and the pacing is tighter for it. A K-drama adaptation aired in 2018 with Cha Eun-woo, which brought significant secondary readership to the manhwa but occasionally gets cited as better-paced than the source material.
Platform: WEBTOON | Status: Completed 2017
Four seasons, the English version concluding on March 7, 2020. Hong Seol, a diligent scholarship student, gets entangled with Yoo Jung, a senior who appears perfect but whose behavior doesn't quite add up. The romance is built on genuine ambiguity about whether Yoo Jung is someone she should want to be with.
Cheese in the Trap is the outlier on this list in that the romance is also a psychological mystery. You're never fully certain about Yoo Jung's motives, which makes the slow burn feel different: it's not pining, it's wariness softening over time. The series ran from 2010 to 2017 and accumulated real critical weight. A K-drama aired in 2016, but the manhwa ending and the drama's ending diverge significantly.
For readers interested in how the best completed manhwa handle romantic ambiguity, this is one of the few examples where uncertainty was the intentional design, not a writing problem.

Best Manhwa to Read in 2026 →
The magical or historical setting here isn't just decoration. It's the thing creating the romantic problem. Distance, enchantment, power imbalance, silence enforced by rank. These series couldn't work in a contemporary school setting.
Lucia is a lady-in-waiting who falls for Modeus, a knight she doesn't immediately realize is an enchanted suit of armor with no soul inside. Suitor Armor, by Southern Californian creator Purpah, is a WEBTOON Original that ran through a Season 3 finale in October 2025 (166 episodes across three seasons) and is currently on hiatus while the author regroups.
The romance works because the fantasy premise creates a specific kind of longing: she's drawn to something she can't fully reach, and the series doesn't cheat by resolving it early. Purpah's art has strong warmth. The palette is rich without being heavy, and the secondary cast gets enough development to make the world feel inhabited.
If you like romantasy that earns its emotional beats rather than just staging them in a castle, this is worth the read. The hiatus is temporary. Purpah has confirmed the series will return.
Platform: WEBTOON | Status: Season 3 complete, hiatus (returning)
Riftan and Maxi's story is the medieval fantasy romance with the most obvious power imbalance on this list: a knight returning from war to the wife he left behind, both of them carrying damage the other doesn't immediately understand. The manhwa is an adaptation of a completed Korean web novel by Suji Kim, drawn by namu.
As of mid-2026, the manhwa is in Season 5 past chapter 150, adapting what the team describes as the final portion of Book 1 of the novel. Season 4 ended in April 2025. The source novel is complete, so there's no risk of the adaptation running out of material.
This is not on WEBTOON. Manta Comics holds exclusive rights, and the app is where updates land fastest. The art is consistent and the adaptation is described by readers as faithful without being mechanical. The slow reveal of what happened between Maxi and Riftan before the main story starts is what makes the first arc hit the way it does.
Platform: Manta Comics (exclusive) | Status: Ongoing, Season 5
Under the Oak Tree is fantasy romance done slowly and seriously. Season 5 is ongoing on Manta Comics in 2026.
Not every school romance has real stakes. These two do.
93 chapters plus epilogues, completed. Hana Han turns into a dog at midnight every time she kisses someone, which makes her accidental kiss with her coworker Seo Wondo (who is afraid of dogs) a significant problem. The curse is the romance obstacle and the comedic engine at once.
Lee Hey uses the premise carefully: it doesn't become a farce, and it doesn't get ignored after the setup. The relationship development is slower than you'd expect from a 93-chapter series with a ticking clock. Both leads have real emotional hesitation that the story takes seriously. A K-drama adaptation aired in 2023.
This is the shortest fully-completed series on the list and the one I'd recommend if you want something that starts, resolves, and doesn't ask too much of your reading time.

The most common complaint I hear about best romance manhwa is that they stall. Love interests orbit each other for 200 chapters, nothing resolves, and then the ending rushes. That complaint is legitimate for some series, but the picks here either avoid that problem structurally (Suitor Armor, Under the Oak Tree use the fantasy premise to justify slower pacing), have already resolved (True Beauty, Cheese in the Trap, A Good Day to Be a Dog are all done), or are doing something thematically specific enough that the length serves the story (I Love Yoo, Love Revolution).
The identity-focused picks (True Beauty, My ID is Gangnam Beauty, Cheese in the Trap) share a structure where the romantic question and the self-perception question are the same question. That's what makes them feel heavier than a standard will-they-won't-they. The romance isn't the point; it's the measure.
If you want more picks beyond this best romance manhwa list, the manhwa like True Beauty page covers series with similar identity-through-appearance themes. For where to access everything legally, where to read manhwa legally in 2026 covers WEBTOON, Manta, and the other major platforms.
What is the best romance manhwa for beginners? True Beauty is the easiest entry point. It's completed at 117 episodes, available free on WEBTOON, and has a K-drama adaptation you can use as a reference if the story loses you. A Good Day to Be a Dog (93 chapters) is also great if you want something shorter and fully wrapped up.
Are there any completed romance manhwa worth reading? Several on this list are fully done. True Beauty finished in June 2023. Cheese in the Trap ended in 2017 with 4 complete seasons. A Good Day to Be a Dog has 93 chapters plus epilogues. Unholy Blood wrapped at 92 chapters. My ID is Gangnam Beauty concluded in 2017. Love Revolution completed its run in April 2023 after 430+ episodes.
What is the difference between slow burn and school romance in manhwa? Slow burn means the leads know they have feelings but the story makes them wait (sometimes 80-100 chapters) before anything resolves. School romance can move faster; the tension is more situational (shared classes, clubs, rumors) than purely emotional. I Love Yoo and Cheese in the Trap both run slow, but for different reasons.
Is Under the Oak Tree available on WEBTOON? No. Under the Oak Tree is exclusively on Manta Comics. As of mid-2026 it's in Season 5, past chapter 150.
What romance manhwa has a K-drama adaptation? True Beauty (2020-2021), My ID is Gangnam Beauty (2018), A Good Day to Be a Dog (2023), Cheese in the Trap (2016), and Love Revolution all have official K-drama or web drama adaptations.
Is I Love Yoo still ongoing in 2026? It's on extended hiatus. A physical Volume 1 was announced for 2026 but the web series has no confirmed return schedule.
What romance manhwa balances fantasy and romance equally? Suitor Armor and Under the Oak Tree both give the romantic development as much weight as the world-building. In Suitor Armor the fantasy premise is the actual source of romantic tension. Under the Oak Tree grounds the romance in medieval power dynamics and silence.
