If you're hunting for manhwa like Reformation of the Deadbeat Noble, start with The Knight Only Lives Today. It runs the same engine, a hero who gets strong by grinding through failure, and it doesn't soften the cost. One housekeeping note first: Reformation of the Deadbeat Noble is the fan name for the series WEBTOON publishes as The Lazy Lord Masters the Sword (나태 공자, 노력 천재 되다). Same Airen Farreira, same story.
What Airen's fans are actually after
After watching his mother die, young Airen sleeps his days away to escape, earning the nickname "the lazy lord." He doesn't care what people whisper. Then he dreams of a mysterious swordsman, and his life turns. The pull isn't a system or a bloodline. It's watching someone everyone wrote off put in the work, and the gap that opens between what they assume and what he can do.

Enkrid has wanted to be a knight his whole life, and the dream looks forever out of reach. Then he dies, and wakes up at the beginning of that same day, with unlimited chances to train and fight. It's Airen's effort-over-talent engine with a harder edge: every lesson costs a death, and nothing about the progress is handed to him. Our review rates it 8.5/10.
WEBTOON's English run wrapped Season 1 in late August 2026 with a "will return!" note; it updates on Fridays when it's running.
2. Teenage Mercenary (Mercenary Enrollment)
Teenage Mercenary (입학용병), story by YC, art by Rakyeon (cover via AniList).
This one runs the premise in reverse, and it's worth saying plainly. Ijin Yu lost his parents in a plane crash at eight and survived as a child mercenary abroad. Ten years later he comes home to Korea with one year of high school left, already strong and hiding it. Airen builds strength nobody believes in; Ijin conceals strength nobody suspects. The school setting and the gap between how people see him and what he can do land in the same place.
The English release on WEBTOON reached Episode 276 in June 2026 and is on a break with a "will return!" note. The official trailer gives you the tone in under a minute:

3. The Academy's Genius Swordsman
The Academy's Genius Swordsman (아카데미의 천재칼잡이), original story by SeoGwando, WEBTOON credits SeoGwando and C.H (cover via AniList).
Ronan is the last man standing of the imperial army after a war against giants, and then more giants come down from the sky. His dying commander, Grand Marshal Adeshan, uses her last time slip to send him back so he can enroll at Phileon Academy and become the empire's strongest swordsman. He isn't hiding weakness, he's carrying strength and memory from a future that went wrong, so this reads more like a mission than a growth arc. What carries over is the sword academy and the outsider at its center. Our review has the full case.

4. Nano Machine
Nano Machine (나노마신), story by Geobalhan, art by Geumgangbulgoe, original story by Hanjung Wolya (cover via AniList).
Yeo-un's mother isn't one of the High Priest's six official wives, which puts him at the bottom of a fight with his half-siblings for the post of Minor Priest. Then a nanomachine injection from a future descendant gives him an edge nobody around him can see. Fair warning: the device does a lot of the lifting, so the effort-over-talent match is looser than the top three. What lines up is a dismissed son proving the family wrong. 5. Martial Peak
Martial Peak (武炼巅峰), story and art by PIKAPI, original story by Momo (cover via AniList).
Yang Kai is a disciple on trial and a floor sweeper at the Lingxiao Martial Arts Sect, the lowest rung there is, until he finds a Wordless Black Book and his luck turns. It's a Chinese manhua rather than a Korean manhwa, and the cultivation pacing runs on a different rhythm than Airen's story. Pick it up if the "lowest in the house climbs" part is what you love most and you don't mind a very long road. Our Martial Peak review rates it 7.5/10.
6. Overgeared
Overgeared (템빨), original story by Park Saenal, art by Team Argo (cover via AniList).
Shin Youngwoo, known as Grid, is unlucky in life and a low-level player in the VR game Satisfy until a powerful item hands him a rare legendary class, Pagma's Successor. That's a shortcut Airen never gets, so be honest with yourself about why you're reading. What does carry over is the grind after it: he's a blacksmith who has to earn his place forging gear. The English release on WEBTOON updates on Saturdays.
7. The Beginning After the End

King Grey has unrivaled strength, wealth and prestige, and nothing to live for. Reborn into a world of magic and monsters, he gets a second chance, with mistakes to correct and a threat building under the new world's peace. It's magic rather than swordsmanship, and he starts with a past life's experience Airen never had. The match is the noble-household backdrop and a hero who out-thinks his circumstances. Our Take
If you only add one, make it The Knight Only Lives Today: it's the purest version of what makes Airen's story work, a hero who isn't talented and gets there anyway. Teenage Mercenary is the pick if the school half is what you'll miss. We'd skip Overgeared and Nano Machine unless you're fine with a hero who gets a head start from an item, because that's exactly what Airen's story refuses to do.
