Best Necromancer Manhwa: 7 Undead Army Leads Ranked

TL;DR: The best necromancer manhwa start with The Lone Necromancer, a finished campus-survival story about a soldier who picks the necromancer role, then Seoul Station's Necromancer for a returnee hiding his undead army in a hunter world. For comedy, The Holy Emperor's Grandson is a Necromancer makes zombies nice. Every pick below names necromancy in its official synopsis.

Three Korean necromancer manhwa covers side by side: a lead with green spirit flames, a boy with half a skull mask, and a swordsman summoning skeletons in lightning

The best necromancer manhwa are a small, specific group, so here is the rule up front: the lead has to raise, command or inherit power over the dead, and the official synopsis has to say so. Shadow-army stories in general are covered in manhwa like Solo Leveling, and broader hunter picks are in best hunter manhwa.

Key Takeaways

The best necromancer manhwa split by where the necromancy comes from: a role picked in a crisis (The Lone Necromancer), power earned in another world (Seoul Station's Necromancer), a family inheritance (The Necromancer Family's Young Heir), or a talent trained at school (Necromancer Academy and the Genius Summoner).

Best overall: The Lone Necromancer, FINISHED at 223 chapters on AniList and COMPLETED on WEBTOON.
Best returnee comeback: Seoul Station's Necromancer.
Best comedy: The Holy Emperor's Grandson is a Necromancer, where the zombies are "incredibly nice."
Best dark-fantasy house story: The Necromancer Family's Young Heir.
Best academy pick: Necromancer Academy and the Genius Summoner, currently on a Tapas hiatus.
Source rule: AniList chapter counts and English platform episode totals are separate records.

Overview: what counts as a necromancer manhwa

A necromancer manhwa, for this list, is one where the official synopsis names necromancy, the undead or zombies as the lead's own power. A villain who raises skeletons doesn't count, and neither does a dark mage whose synopsis never mentions the dead. If you came looking for a best necromancer manhwa list that actually stays on topic, that is the filter.

The rule cut some popular titles. Several hunter stories have shadow soldiers or undead summons, but their synopses frame the power differently. Only series where necromancy is part of the premise as written by the publisher stayed on the list, and each one's AniList status and English platform page were checked on October 8, 2026.

All seven picks are Korean and none is marked adult on AniList. Four are on Tapas, three on WEBTOON. WEBTOON often shows only the first episodes on the web and the rest in its app, so a short web list is read here as a display limit, not a short series.

Analysis: four ways manhwa write the necromancer

The best necromancer manhwa usually answer one question differently: where did the power come from? Picked in a crisis, the lead learns as the reader learns. Earned earlier, the lead is already dangerous and hiding it. Inherited, it comes with family politics. Trained, it comes with rivals and teachers.

The crisis version, The Lone Necromancer, is the most survival-heavy. The necromancer role is a choice made under pressure, and the undead are the lead's only advantage against monsters.

The returnee version is the comeback story. Seoul Station's Necromancer, All-Master Necromancer and The Reborn Ranker Chronicles all start with a lead who already knows what he is doing, and the tension is how fast he gets it back.

The inheritance version is the darkest. The Necromancer Family's Young Heir ties necromancy to a declining house and a devil's pact, which gives it a tragic weight the others don't try for. Then there's the outlier: The Holy Emperor's Grandson is a Necromancer, which plays the whole idea for laughs.

The 7 best necromancer manhwa, ranked

These seven are the best necromancer manhwa we could verify, ranked by how central the necromancy is and how well each story uses it. Five are finished on AniList and two are still releasing. Each entry gives the official English route and the platform's own status, schedule or hiatus label.

1. The Lone Necromancer

The Lone Necromancer Korean cover showing a brown-haired young man with green spirit flames curling around him and a ghostly hand behind his shoulder The Lone Necromancer (cover via AniList).

This is the cleanest starting point. WEBTOON's synopsis follows Seongwu, "a former special forces soldier who has returned to college," whose class is hit with a prompt to "select a role." He chooses the necromancer, "a rare ability that grants him the power to control the undead," as the campus collapses around him.

It works because the setup is so concrete. The early English episode titles read like a map of the campus going under: "The Campus Has Gone to Hell" and "The Boss Monster of the Humanities and Social Sciences Building." The undead are tools for keeping people alive, not just a show of strength.

AniList lists it as FINISHED at 223 chapters. The English WEBTOON page labels it COMPLETED, showed 100.5M views, and credits JJJ for the original work and KIM KYOUNG-YEOL as adapter. Its web list showed only the first 7 episodes, with the rest in the app. WEBTOON's own channel put it up against Zombie X Slasher in a hosted comparison episode:

Readers are split on the back half. In an r/webtoons thread asking whether it's worth reading, one reply praises its "good humor, recurring but not overused gags, good character upgrades, nice progression of the story and the scale of conflict," while another reader who dropped it near the end says, "The early arcs were good, but after a certain point, he became a boring, invincible Hero."

2. Seoul Station's Necromancer

Seoul Station's Necromancer Korean cover showing a dark-haired man with purple energy in his hand in front of a giant skull with glowing red eyes Seoul Station's Necromancer (cover via AniList).

The best pick if you came from hunter manhwa. Tapas describes Kang Woojin, who "had become a fearsome necromancer and ruler of his own territory" after "years of fighting for survival on planet Alphen." Back on Earth, he's "nothing more than a low-level player clearing dungeons for cash."

The hidden-strength setup is the hook. Woojin's skills get "major guilds vying for his attention," and the synopsis promises his old enemy is "threatening invasion." It's the closest thing here to a Solo Leveling-style gate world with a necromancer at the center.

AniList lists it as FINISHED at 150 chapters. Tapas labels it a "Completed series" and showed 150 episodes and 2.2m views on October 8, 2026.

3. The Holy Emperor's Grandson is a Necromancer

The Holy Emperor's Grandson is a Necromancer (cover via AniList).

The comedy pick, and a genuinely fresh one. WEBTOON's synopsis says the Holy Emperor's troublemaker grandson is taken over by "a Korean man who died while playing a VR video game." His necromancer character gets "mixed with a Holy Prince's blood," so "the zombies he makes are incredibly nice" and "his curses start healing people."

It earns its place by inverting every necromancer cliché at once. The lead has the darkest class in the game and the holiest bloodline in the empire, and the synopsis says he'd "rather just go for a nap" than play the hero.

AniList lists the Korean series as FINISHED at 130 chapters. The English WEBTOON page is still releasing, with "(S3) Episode 112" dated October 6, 2026 and an "EVERY WEDNESDAY" label.

If the undead-army hook is what pulled you in, sorts the wider shadow-and-summon field by what you liked about the original.

4. The Necromancer Family's Young Heir

The Necromancer Family's Young Heir (cover via AniList).

The darkest pick on the list. WEBTOON's synopsis says Leon von Marbas "had no choice but to execute his father when his house was defeated in a war," and is left at 14 to lead a clan whose "Marbas necromancy has dwindled." Then "Marbas the Black Lion, the devil who granted the power of necromancy to his forefather," approaches him.

It's the best choice if you want necromancy as a family burden rather than a cheat. WEBTOON also notes it is "a spinoff of 'Time-Limited Genius Dark Knight,'" so it sits inside a larger shared setting.

AniList lists it as RELEASING with no chapter total. The English WEBTOON page showed "(S2) Episode 76" dated October 4, 2026 and an "EVERY MONDAY" label.

5. All-Master Necromancer

All-Master Necromancer Korean cover showing a dark-haired man in a black coat holding a glowing purple orb amid purple magic All-Master Necromancer (cover via AniList).

The revenge pick. Tapas says the powerful necromancer Cha Jinhyuk is "betrayed and killed by his fellow Ninestar guild members" and survives through "a daring soul transference." He wakes a decade later "devoid of his former powers," then climbs the tower again with the "overpowered abilities of an 'All-Master.'"

It's the shortest finished series here and moves fast, which suits readers who want a complete necromancer revenge arc without a 200-chapter commitment. The companions, "Spirit Master Balkan and hobgoblin Haryu," give it a small-party feel.

AniList lists it as FINISHED at 96 chapters. Tapas labels it a "Completed series" with 96 episodes.

Tapas ends service on March 31, 2027 at 23:59 PT, so check the Tapas shutdown tracker before starting.

6. The Reborn Ranker Chronicles

The Reborn Ranker Chronicles Korean cover showing a long-haired swordsman in red and white robes as lightning and grinning skeletons surround him The Reborn Ranker Chronicles (cover via AniList).

The genre-mix pick. Tapas follows "legendary SSS-rank hunter Kang Taeha," who dies and wakes in "imperial China" as Liu Xinyun, "the delinquent heir to a powerful company." To survive his relatives, he has to rebuild from level one, and the synopsis asks whether "his own unique blend of necromancy and martial arts" can carry him.

That blend is why it's here. It's the one pick where undead summoning meets martial-arts family politics, so it suits readers who like murim stories but want something stranger. For the martial-arts side, see best martial arts manhwa.

AniList lists it as FINISHED at 201 chapters. Tapas labels it a "Completed series" with 201 episodes.

7. Necromancer Academy and the Genius Summoner

Necromancer Academy and the Genius Summoner (cover via AniList).

The academy pick. Tapas opens with necromancers as "fearsome practitioners of magic capable of dropping entire empires to their knees," then introduces Simon Follentia, "a necromancer with incredible latent talent" who is "scouted for the necromancer's academy."

It ranks last only because it's paused. It's the only pick here built around a necromancer school, and its cover leans into a lighter tone than the rest of this list.

AniList lists it as RELEASING with no chapter total. Tapas showed 178 episodes and a hiatus announcement saying the series "will be entering a hiatus in order to allow the team more time to work on episodes."

Our Take: how to choose among the best necromancer manhwa

This take rests only on the AniList and platform facts cited in each entry above. Choose by where you want the power to come from. For survival, read The Lone Necromancer. For a hidden-strength hunter story, Seoul Station's Necromancer. For laughs, The Holy Emperor's Grandson is a Necromancer. For a dark family saga, The Necromancer Family's Young Heir. For revenge, All-Master Necromancer.

If you only want finished stories, five of the best necromancer manhwa here are complete on AniList: The Lone Necromancer, Seoul Station's Necromancer, The Holy Emperor's Grandson is a Necromancer, All-Master Necromancer and The Reborn Ranker Chronicles. One caveat: the Holy Emperor's Grandson English edition is still releasing weekly on WEBTOON.

On platforms, three picks are on WEBTOON and four on Tapas. Tapas has announced the end of its service on March 31, 2027 at 23:59 PT, so the WEBTOON picks are the safer long-term start. Newer WEBTOON originals like Rise of the Limitless Necromancer have their own review.
