Modern System Manhwa: 6 Set in Today's Korea, Ranked

Start with QUESTISM: its first quest window shows up in a bullied student's real classroom, and the whole 174-chapter run is finished and free to start on WEBTOON.

VerdictQUESTISM for a system in ordinary school life, Solo Leveling for monsters in modern Seoul, The Top Dungeon Farmer for something gentle that is still coming out every week.

Modern system manhwa drop a video-game interface into ordinary life in present-day Korea: a quest window over a school desk, a level-up screen in a Seoul apartment, a dungeon gate in Gangnam. The one to start with is QUESTISM. Its first quest appears to a bullied high school gamer in his own bedroom, and it asks him to apologize to his mom.

Three Korean manhwa covers side by side: The Gamer's smiling student in a blue shirt and red tie, QUESTISM's glaring black-haired student with pale blue eyes between glowing cards, and The Top Dungeon Farmer's young man with a white rabbit and an orange cat

Pick by what you want the system to do. If you want it to change daily life, read QUESTISM or The Gamer. If you want monsters in a modern city, read Solo Leveling. If you want something gentle, read The Top Dungeon Farmer. We kept out stories set in game worlds, towers you never leave, or murim regressions; the best system fantasy manhwa list covers those.

1. QUESTISM

QUESTISM cover: a black-haired student with pale blue eyes glares forward between glowing gold and silver cards under the Korean title QUESTISM (cover via AniList).

The best modern system manhwa for one reason: the system cares about ordinary life. WEBTOON's synopsis sets it up. Gaming geek Suhyeon Kim "faces relentless bullying" at school and wishes his life were more like "the RPG quest games he plays," until "a quest prompt pops up in real life."

We read Episode 1 on WEBTOON on October 23, 2026. A blue window reads "Quest window activated," then "Would you like to begin the quest?" with yes and no buttons. When Suhyeon finally presses yes alone in his room, the first tutorial quest is "Apologize to your mom [0/1]," with a reward of "1 gold card." He has just yelled at her and slammed his bedroom door. That small, domestic first quest is the whole appeal: the system starts by fixing the life he already has, before it gets anywhere near fights.

Know what you are signing up for. The school scenes are harsh, with bullying, crude jokes and a lot of violence; AniList tags it with gangs, bullying and martial arts. AniList lists it as finished at 174 chapters, and the WEBTOON page marks the English edition completed, with 55.4M views and 441,318 subscribers.

2. Solo Leveling

Solo Leveling cover: a young man in a dark coat holding a glowing blade, wrapped in black smoke Solo Leveling (cover via AniList).

Pick this if you want the system to fight monsters in a modern city. AniList's synopsis: Jin-U is "the weakest hunter of all mankind" until a near-fatal dungeon, after which "a mysterious System chooses him as its sole player" and lets him level up. The gates and dungeons are new, but the world around them is present-day Korea, and AniList tags it Urban Fantasy.

It is finished at 201 chapters, which AniList notes "includes 22 extra chapters." English readers have several official choices: AniList links Tappytoon, Manta, Tapas and Webnovel, plus Yen Press for print. Skip Tapas for this one, since Tapas shuts down on March 31, 2027. Our Solo Leveling review has the full verdict, and manhwa like Solo Leveling has more in the same mold.

3. The Gamer

The Gamer cover: a smiling purple-haired high school student in a blue shirt and red tie under a green pixel-style title The Gamer (cover via AniList).

The original of the modern system story, and the best first chapter on this list. AniList calls Jihan Han a "typical high school student" with "the special ability to view the world around him as a video-game," juggling "homework and completing quests."

The Gamer Episode 1: a blue Quest Alert window reading "Task from Mom: Go get some tofu!" with a one-hour limit, a reward of EXP +500 and closeness with Mom, and a fail penalty of nagging Mom Screenshot: WEBTOON, The Gamer Episode 1, October 23, 2026.

We read Episode 1 on WEBTOON on October 23, 2026. Jihan introduces himself as "a poor guy who got this weird power called ," and the first quest alert of the series is "Task from Mom: Go get some tofu!" The reward is "EXP. +500" and closer ties with Mom; the fail penalty is "nagging Mom." It is a funny, low-stakes start, and QUESTISM's apology quest reads to us like a nod to it.

The catch is length. AniList lists 510 chapters, finished in 2024, and the WEBTOON page shows 497.6M views. Readers who stayed are blunt about the back half. In an October 2023 r/manhwa thread on The Gamer, the most upvoted reply was "It's bad, so bad," and another read "It started out very promising, but wow did it get boring and pointless." Read the early arcs for the system ideas, and stop when it stops being fun. Our The Gamer review has the full verdict.

4. The Top Dungeon Farmer

The Top Dungeon Farmer cover: a smiling young man in a white T-shirt with a white rabbit and an orange cat in a green cloak on his shoulders The Top Dungeon Farmer (cover via AniList).

The cozy pick. WEBTOON calls Sejun "your average Seoul underdog" who stumbles into "the mysterious dungeon full of monster quests" and ends up growing tomatoes.

We read Episode 1 on WEBTOON on October 23, 2026. The modern setting is the frame: "Ten years ago in Seoul," a "black 99-story tower appeared in downtown Gangnam," and "one hundred such towers appeared simultaneously" around the world. Sejun's line is "It's been 150 days since I got trapped in this dungeon I'd stumbled into." The system turns his farming into item text: a cat peddler sells his tomatoes to a party of adventurers, and a window reads "Magic Cherry Tomatoes: increase magic by 0.01 for 10 minutes." Episode 1 opens in the dungeon, then spends nearly half its length on a flashback to Sejun's ordinary life in Seoul before he enters it. The farm and the animals are the draw, but the city setup is real.

It is the only ongoing pick here on WEBTOON, which is not the platform that is closing. The WEBTOON page says "Up every Thursday," lists Season 2 Episode 138 on October 28, 2026, and shows 47.9M views.

5. Dungeons and Crayons

Dungeons and Crayons cover: a small blonde girl in a pink dress holding a bright wand, with a dark-haired man in a suit behind her and toys around them Dungeons and Crayons (cover via AniList).

The funniest premise here. AniList's synopsis: at 4, Groo is "the youngest S-ranked awakened in the country," and "her first quest window" tells her to find a grown-up to take her in. She marches into Korea's top guild and the guild master ends up adopting her.

It started in 2025 and is still releasing, and AniList's only English link is Tapas. That matters: Tapas's End of Service FAQ sets March 31, 2027 as the last day to unlock episodes and access content, and AniList lists no other English home yet. Read it if the found-family angle appeals, but don't buy Ink for it expecting to keep it.

6. The Player Who Can't Level Up

The Player Who Can't Level Up cover: a dark-haired young man in a black coat swinging a glowing blade through streaks of purple light The Player Who Can't Level Up (cover via AniList).

The underdog pick. AniList's synopsis: Kim Kigyu becomes a player but "just can't seem to get past level 1." After five years as a guide on the tower's lower floors, he finds he can link with "Egos" to "raise his stats." It flips the system story: the hook is that the game screen keeps saying no.

It is still releasing and, like Dungeons and Crayons, AniList's only English link is Tapas, so the March 31, 2027 shutdown applies. Our review has the full verdict.

One to skip: Real World Mobile

On paper it is a perfect fit. WEBTOON's synopsis has a high school gamer download a mobile game whose missions, starting with "drink 3 glasses of water," carry real-life penalties if he ignores them. But its WEBTOON page still says "Up every Wednesday" while the newest English episode listed is Episode 14, dated November 7, 2023. Wait until new episodes appear.

Our take: which modern system manhwa to start

Start with QUESTISM. Its first episode is the clearest version of what people mean by a system in the modern world: a normal kid, a real classroom, a real argument at home, and a game window that turns all of it into quests. It is also finished, so you know the story has an ending. If you want the bigger action version, read Solo Leveling next, on Tappytoon or Manta rather than Tapas.

The genre's weak spot is long runs that lose the plot. The Gamer has the best opening ideas here and the harshest reader verdict on its later chapters. Two of the six picks are Tapas-only with five months left on the platform, so start those knowing the clock is running.
