Anime Like The Exiled Heavy Knight: 6 Tank and Gamer Picks

Watch BOFURI first. AniList users recommend it on the Heavy Knight page more than any other single show, and its whole joke is a defense build everyone underrates.

VerdictBOFURI for the defense build (23 AniList recommendations, the most of any single show), Shangri-La Frontier for a player who knows how games break, The Rising of the Shield Hero for the cast-out underdog.

Of all the anime like The Exiled Heavy Knight, start with BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense. On the Heavy Knight's AniList page, users recommend it 23 times, more than any other single show. The match is the build. Elymas pulls the class everyone calls defective and turns it into a wall; Maple, in MyAnimeList's synopsis, "allocates all of her stat points into vitality" and ends up with "extraordinarily high defense." For more VR-game shows, our anime like Overgeared list has eight.

Three anime posters side by side: a blond knight in a fur-trimmed cloak swinging a sword, a black-haired girl in black and red armor next to a huge red-lined shield, and a black-haired man in a green cloak holding a round shield with a blue gem

If what hooked you was Elymas knowing the game better than anyone alive, watch Shangri-La Frontier. If it was the father throwing him out, watch The Rising of the Shield Hero. Episode 19 airs at 00:26 on Friday, November 6 in Japan, which is still Thursday, November 5 in the Americas, and AniList lists 26 episodes in total, so there are seven left after it.

What Episode 1 of The Exiled Heavy Knight sells

We watched Episode 1, "Elymas The Heavy Knight," on Muse Asia's YouTube channel, one of the streaming links AniList lists. It runs 23 minutes 40 seconds and sells three separate things, in this order.

First, the class. Before the opening credits, a narrator explains the Heavy Knight over shots of armor: "A class specializing in defense that protects their teammates." Then the catch: "Leveling up is difficult because their offensive power is very low."

Second, the game knowledge. At his Ritual of Divine Blessing (5:11), the heir of the Edvaughn family gets a memory back mid-ceremony: "This world is exactly the same as the VR online game I was so into in my past life: Magic World!" His next thought is "Since I know everything about the game, I'm thrilled and sure I can win!" and the class he's hoping for is Heavy Knight, "the broken class that is known to be the strongest in Magic World!"

Third, the exile. His father sees the result at 7:35 and calls it "just a wooden doll with abysmally low stats without good offensive skill!" A cousin from the branch family, Malice, takes the ritual next, and by 10:38 the father is telling her, "from now on you are my daughter." At 11:05 he turns to Elymas: "Someone like you who betrayed my expectations is no longer my son!"

The back half is the build. Elymas opens his skill tree (15:20), has five points to spend and gets one more per level, and puts points into the skill everyone mocks: "the Oath of the Heavy Armor is mocked as the weakest and a waste of space." On screen it reaches level 2 and unlocks Rampart Reflection, which "nullifies damage by having a defense stat exceeding the enemy's attack." In the forest fight he uses it and explains, "I know all about starter enemies!" The last scene before the end credits closes on "I'm Elymas, the Heavy Knight." (21:35), and a short scene after the credits ends on "I can win this battle!"

So "like The Exiled Heavy Knight" means one of three things: a defense build that looks weak and isn't, a hero who already knows the game, or a hero thrown out by the people who should have backed him. Each pick below is strongest on one of those.

Why so many viewers want something else

The show has a pacing problem, and some viewers say so loudly. An r/anime post from October 24, 2026, with 579 upvotes, calls it "less an anime and more of an animation demo for a portfolio" and complains that "they literally showed the scene where the jester girl was being berated twice." The second most upvoted reply, at 300, is the fair version: "I still enjoy it, especially because of Luce, but the amount of reused footage is astounding."

An August post made the same point earlier: "the anime spends like 4mins of intro just about flashbacks of the previous episode," and "It's like we barely watch like 12 mins of the anime per episode." Not everyone minds. One reply in the October thread likes the long camera moves: "It's like im playing a jrpg game, which is the point."

Episode 1 has no recap to pad, so we can't confirm the later complaints from what we watched. What we can say is that the AniList score sits at 67, and five of our six picks score higher. If the hook works for you but the weekly pace doesn't, every season in the table below has finished airing, so there's no weekly wait, and the manga is the other way out (last section).

Anime like The Exiled Heavy Knight, by AniList recommendations

These are the user recommendation counts on the anime's AniList page on November 1, 2026, next to what each show shares with Elymas. Scores are AniList averages on the same day and move as people vote.

Two counts are split by season because AniList counts each season on its own page. Added up, Skeleton Knight has 26 and HELL MODE 23, but we ranked by how close the hook is, not by volume. I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World (15) and From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman (10) also showed up; neither synopsis mentions a game or a defense build, so they're out.

1. BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense.

BOFURI key visual: a black-haired girl in black and red armor next to a huge black shield with red lines while her guildmates fly around a giant tree under a blue sky BOFURI (cover via AniList).

The closest match to the Heavy Knight's build, played as a comedy. Kaede Honjou joins a VR game and, as MyAnimeList's synopsis puts it, "allocates all of her stat points into vitality," so her character Maple "has extraordinarily high defense, but she can't move quickly or hit hard."

The difference is attitude. Elymas plans every point; Maple is "a complete novice," and the show is light enough that AniList tags it Cute Girls Doing Cute Things at 83%. There's no exile and no family drama. Season 1 is 12 episodes from SILVER LINK. in 2020, and Season 2 added 12 more in 2023. Skip it if you came for the revenge.

2. Shangri-La Frontier

Shangri-La Frontier key visual: a shirtless player in a blue bird mask charges forward with a green blade, with a knight in white armor, a dragon and a rabbit behind him Shangri-La Frontier (cover via AniList).

The best-rated show on this list, and the pick for the half of the Heavy Knight that's about game knowledge. Rakuro Hizutome is one of the "crap-game hunters" who clear broken games for fun, and he takes that eye for exploits into a "god-tier game." It has the highest AniList score here, 80. Season 1 ran 25 episodes from studio C2C, and Season 2 another 25.

Where it differs: Shangri-La Frontier is a game Rakuro chooses to play, not a world he's reborn into, and there's no family waiting to throw him out.

3. The Rising of the Shield Hero

The Rising of the Shield Hero key visual: a black-haired man in a green fur-trimmed cloak holds a round shield with a blue gem, with an orange-haired girl holding a sword and a blond girl with wings behind him The Rising of the Shield Hero (cover via AniList).

The pick for the exile. Naofumi is "summoned to a parallel universe" as one of four heroes and gets the shield, "the weakest of the heroes" in AniList's synopsis, and is "soon alone, penniless, and betrayed." AniList tags it Exiled (79%) and Revenge (82%), and about 470,000 AniList users have it on their lists, the most of any show here.

It's darker than the Heavy Knight and has no cheat sheet: Naofumi is summoned, not reborn into a game he already mastered. MyAnimeList's synopsis says he's "belittled and ridiculed" for the shield. Season 1 runs 25 episodes (Kinema Citrus, 2019), Season 2 13. If you want Elymas's father to get what's coming, this is the closest feeling.

4. HELL MODE

HELL MODE key visual: a black-haired boy in a red cloak reaches forward among flying cards while companions with weapons, birds, a frog and a white mouse rush around him HELL MODE (cover via AniList).

The other show where a veteran gamer wakes up inside the game's world. Kenichi Yamada picks the hardest setting and the "Summoner" class, and is "reborn to a family of serfs as a baby named Allen." AniList tags it Class Struggle (68%), the same tag the Heavy Knight carries at 76%, because both are about a class system that decides who matters.

The difference is the starting point. Allen starts at the bottom of society, where Elymas falls from the top of it, and he fights through creatures he summons (AniList's top tag is Creature Taming, 97%) instead of a wall of armor. It also aired this year: 12 episodes in winter 2026 and 13 more in summer, both from Yokohama Animation Lab. AniList lists HIDIVE as its streaming home, the only pick here not on Crunchyroll.

5. Skeleton Knight in Another World

Skeleton Knight in Another World key visual: a giant knight with a glowing skull face in white and gold armor stands under a full moon, a pink-haired swordswoman and a dark-haired ninja girl in front Skeleton Knight in Another World (cover via AniList).

The most-recommended franchise on the Heavy Knight's page once both seasons are added up (26), and the pick for heavy armor. A gamer falls asleep playing and wakes up "in the game world" as a skeleton, with "the powerful weapons and armor of his avatar."

That's also why it's fifth. Arc arrives with his avatar's gear and, in MyAnimeList's words, "overpowered abilities," so there's no underdog climb. Season 1 is 12 episodes from 2022; Season 2, 12 more, finished in September 2026 from a different studio, Aura Studio. Watch it if you want an armored knight who wins from the start.

6. The Strongest Tank's Labyrinth Raids

The Strongest Tank's Labyrinth Raids key visual: a black-haired man in silver armor holds a tall yellow shield among several girls in a flower meadow, with a white-haired man and a curly-haired girl by a stone gateway above The Strongest Tank's Labyrinth Raids (cover via AniList).

The same premise in one sentence, and the weakest show here. Rud is "a shielder with a defense stat of 9999," and the hero kicks him out of the party "saying his skill is 'useless.'" That's the Heavy Knight's setup almost word for word.

It scores 59 on AniList, the only pick below the Heavy Knight's 67, and AniList's top tags include Female Harem (79%). It's one season of 12 episodes from 2024. We'd skip it unless the exact "useless tank" premise is the only thing you want.

Or skip ahead in the manga

The Exiled Heavy Knight anime adapts a story that started as a light novel series by Nekoko, illustrated by Jaian, per Crunchyroll News. K MANGA credits the manga to BroccoLee, and AniList lists the anime as an adaptation of that manga. The manga is in English on Kodansha's K MANGA, and AniList also links Seven Seas's English edition. "Read the manga! It is way better tbh" was one of the top replies in the October r/anime thread. If the recaps are what's wearing you out, the manga is the same story without them.

For comics with the same game-knowledge hook, our manhwa like Surviving the Game as a Barbarian list covers a hero who knows the game's rules, and best game manhwa ranks series where those rules matter.

Our pick among anime like The Exiled Heavy Knight

Start with BOFURI. It has the most recommendations of any single show on the Heavy Knight's page, and it's the only one where the defense build is the whole joke rather than the setup. Then go by what you liked: Shangri-La Frontier is the better show if the game knowledge was the draw, and Shield Hero is the one if you watched for the father scene. Skip The Strongest Tank's Labyrinth Raids unless you need the exact premise.

If you're also waiting on a webtoon adaptation, our anime like Omniscient Reader list covers another hero who knows how the story goes, and best manhwa for anime fans sorts comics by the anime you already like.
