Lucas Trowman was the greatest archmage in history until a being called Demigod condemned him to spend eternity losing his mind. Four thousand years later he's back, in the body of Frei Blake, the weakest student at Westroad Academy. Everyone judges him by the body he's in, the same way everyone judges Eugene by his face, only here the misjudgment runs the other way: they think he's nothing. Tapas lists 256 English episodes, and the Korean series is still running.
2. The Infinite Mage

Sirone is a foundling raised by a family of hunters who learns to read young and becomes obsessed with books on the history of magic. In a world where they say only nobles can be mages, a chance meeting with one teaches him to enter the "spirit zone," and from there he climbs on understanding, not bloodline. That's Archmage Curriculum's core idea seen from the student's desk. There's no Eugene-style mentor at the center; this is Sirone's climb. Tapas has 150 episodes up and posted a hiatus notice on April 24, 2026: Season 2 is over, Season 3 is coming.
3. A Returner's Magic Should Be Special

Desir and his party fought inside the Shadow Labyrinth for ten years against the end of the world. When he's about to die, he's sent back thirteen years into the past and sees a chance to train his friends for the end of the world before it comes. That's the closest any pick here gets to Eugene's actual job. It's also the only finished one: AniList lists 268 chapters, and the English edition on Tapas is marked completed. The anime's second season began airing in Japan on October 7, 2026.

4. Book Eater

Theo Miller knows everything about magic except how to use it. Just before he flunks out of Berghen Academy, he finds a grimoire named Gluttony that turns into a magic-hungry creature on his hand, and every magical text it eats makes him stronger. Understanding becomes literal fuel. The catch is the wait: Tapas has 114 episodes and a hiatus notice from August 10, 2024, promising a third season that hasn't started yet.
5. The Academy's Genius Swordsman

Ronan is the last soldier standing after a war against giants. His dying commander, Grand Marshal Adeshan, sends him back in time to enroll at Phileon Academy and become the empire's strongest swordsman. He's a swordsman, not a mage, so the magic-theory side of Archmage Curriculum isn't here; the overlap is a veteran hiding inside a student. It's in Season 2 on WEBTOON, at Episode 147 (October 17, 2026), updating Sundays.
6. The Extra's Academy Survival Guide

Ed Rothstaylor is a third-rate villain in a game, disowned and kicked out of the dorm. The hero wakes up as Ed and only wants to earn a scholarship and graduate, so he lives in the woods and tries to stay away from the protagonists, who won't leave him alone. It's the funniest pick here and has no mentor arc, but knowing the plot ahead of everyone is the whole advantage. WEBTOON has it at Episode 117 (October 18, 2026), every Monday.
7. The Beginning After the End

King Grey had strength, wealth and prestige, and nothing to live for. Reincarnated into a new world of magic and monsters, he gets a second chance at life. Arthur grows rather than teaches, but if what you want is a deep, rule-bound magic system that Archmage Curriculum is only beginning to show, this is the long version. Its English webcomic is on Tapas, where it's in Season 7 with 301 episodes.

Read The Archmage Returns After 4000 Years first if Eugene's misread reputation is what hooked you, and A Returner's Magic Should Be Special if it was the teaching. We'd hold off on Book Eater until its third season actually starts. Four of these picks live on Tapas, which closes on March 31, 2027; if you're starting one now, plan to finish it there or wait for news of a new home.
