Anime Like A Returner's Magic Should Be Special: 6 to Watch

Watch New Saga first. AniList users pair it with A Returner's Magic more than any other show, 40 votes, and it opens on the same wound: a hero who won and lost everyone.

VerdictNew Saga for the returner who won and lost everyone (40 AniList votes), The Irregular at Magic High School for the alpha and beta class war, Tearmoon Empire for a do-over played for laughs.

Of all the anime like A Returner's Magic Should Be Special, start with New Saga. On the Season 1 AniList page, 40 users recommend it, more than twice as many as the next show, and the vote runs both ways: New Saga's own page lists A Returner's Magic first, also at 40. Kyle, a magic swordsman, defeats the Demon King, has lost everyone along the way, and wakes up years earlier with his loved ones still alive. That is Desir's situation with a sword in place of a spellbook. If you would rather read than watch, our manhwa like A Returner's Magic list has eight comics.

Three anime posters side by side: a green-haired boy in a white shirt between two classmates under a red sky, a crowd of fantasy heroes around a swordsman in blue armor, and students in white and green magic-school uniforms

If what kept you watching was the academy, where nobles go to the alpha class and commoners to beta, watch The Irregular at Magic High School instead. If you want the do-over with jokes, Tearmoon Empire. Season 2 of A Returner's Magic has aired every Wednesday night on Fuji TV's +Ultra block since October 7, 2026, so any of these fits between weekly episodes.

What Episode 1 of A Returner's Magic actually sells

We watched Episode 1 on Muse Asia's official YouTube upload, marked "(Limited Time)", posted October 5, 2026 and running 25:48 with English subtitles burned in. A banner in the corner reads "Season 2 starts in October 2026!" Two hooks carry the episode, and they point at different shows.

Episode 1 of A Returner's Magic Should Be Special: a long-haired mage with glowing glasses and a scarred face grimaces against an orange, burning background, with the subtitle "but only six people here survived." Screenshot: Episode 1 at 7:17, via Muse Asia's official YouTube upload.

The first is the returner. At 7:14 one of the last mages says "We had 150 million challengers," and at 7:17 "but only six people here survived." At 7:54: "Especially where 99% of all mages are dead." The episode then does its own time math. Desir wakes in a hall where, at 15:50, a voice announces "the entrance examination for the 3613 academic year!" Over the next minute he remembers that "The fight against Boromir Napolitan started in 3616," and that "for ten years after that, we fought in that labyrinth." Three years plus ten is the 13 years that Crunchyroll's synopsis says he was "sent back in time."

Episode 1 of A Returner's Magic Should Be Special: a brown-haired noble girl on the left and a commoner girl and older man on the right, split by a line of light, with the subtitle "Nobles are in the alpha class. Commoners are in the beta class." Screenshot: Episode 1 at 19:07, via Muse Asia's official YouTube upload.

The second hook is class. At 9:13 Desir explains why nobody has heard of him: "I'm a commoner." At 14:56 a professor tells the applicants that "only the top 600 will be accepted into this academy." At 19:06 the show states its rule outright: "Nobles are in the alpha class. Commoners are in the beta class," followed by "if you're a commoner, you won't get a proper education." The story closes at 24:10 on "I will redo this world!", before the ending credits.

So the list splits. Viewers who liked the knowledge of a future that already went wrong should go to New Saga, Tearmoon Empire and 7th Time Loop. Viewers who liked a gifted outsider stuck in the wrong class at a magic school should go to The Irregular at Magic High School and Akashic Records.

What viewers want from anime like A Returner's Magic Should Be Special

The clearest request for anime similar to A Returner's Magic Should Be Special is a short r/anime post from December 15, 2025. u/Curious_Lie2727 wrote: "I enjoyed the travelling back in time with current knowledge trope. Does anyone have recommendations of similar anime?" The three replies named The Do-Over Damsel Conquers the Dragon Emperor, then "7th Time Loop / Tearmoon Empire / Tsuyokute New Saga", then "Re Zero & Steins Gate."

In April 2026 an r/Animesuggest user listed A Returner's Magic among regression shows already watched, next to Tearmoon Empire and 7th Time Loop, and asked for "just 1 regression and not multiple 'time leaps' so nothing like Re:Zero, Steins;Gate or Tokyo Revengers." When someone suggested New Saga, another user, u/Mattvweiss, answered: "It's very similar to a Returners Magic IMO."

Season 1 is not a beloved show. AniList puts it at a 69% mean score, with about 76,000 users listing it, and one of the two reviews there is titled "A rather disappointing 1 to 1 adaptation of the web comic." Viewers who came away disappointed by the adaptation are who this list is for.

Closest match: New Saga

New Saga key visual: a crowd of fantasy heroes and monsters around a brown-haired swordsman in blue armor, with a red-haired girl and a blond boy in front and fire below New Saga (cover via AniList).

This is the one to watch if the returner was the point. Crunchyroll's synopsis, quoted on AniList, has Kyle defeat the Demon King "but is left dying," until "a crimson crystal sends him four years into the past" to a hometown where "he finds his lost loved ones alive." Wikipedia's plot summary adds that he lost "friends, family, loves, comrades" and decides to get stronger and not repeat his mistakes. Swap the labyrinth for a demon king's castle and you have Desir's first episode.

The r/Animesuggest pitch for it was "MC is the hero that beat the Demon Lord, but his entire party was killed," which is also the best one-line pitch for A Returner's Magic. New Saga ran 12 episodes from July 3 to September 18, 2025, made by Sotsu and Studio Clutch, and Crunchyroll holds it. The catch: AniList scores it at 65%, below A Returner's Magic's 69%. Watch it for more of the same feeling, not for a better show.

For the alpha and beta classes: The Irregular at Magic High School

The Irregular at Magic High School key visual: a black-haired boy at the center of students in white and green magic-school uniforms, including a long-haired black-haired girl and a red-haired student The Irregular at Magic High School (cover via AniList).

If the scene at 19:06 was the one that made you angry, this is your show. Wikipedia describes First High as a school "which segregates its students based on their magical abilities." Miyuki goes to the first course, while Tatsuya "is placed in the second course and considered to be magically inept." AniList's synopsis puts it more bluntly: "a defective elder brother low achiever" and "a perfect, flawless younger sister high achiever." It is the alpha and beta split again, with a hero the system has misread.

AniList users recommend it 18 times on the A Returner's Magic page, second only to New Saga. Season 1 is 26 episodes from April to September 2014 by Madhouse; Eight Bit took over for a second season in late 2020 and a third that premiered in April 2024. One honest warning: both synopses are built around the brother and sister, and AniList's tag list rates "Incest" at 74%. If that relationship puts you off, take the next pick instead.

A lighter academy: Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor key visual: a black-haired man stands in front of a blue magic circle, surrounded by girls in academy uniforms Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor (cover via AniList).

AniList users recommend this one 11 times on the A Returner's Magic page. It keeps the magic academy and the expert nobody takes seriously, and moves that expert to the front of the class. In AniList's synopsis Glenn is "a part-time teacher at a magic school who is inclined to write 'self-study' on the blackboard and then take a nap." Wikipedia adds that he is hiding his power and is "a former assassin from the Imperial Court Mage Corps." Desir hides 13 years of experience behind being an unknown commoner; Glenn hides a career behind laziness.

Like New Saga and the two do-overs below, it is 12 episodes, aired April 4 to June 20, 2017, by Liden Films, with a Crunchyroll link on AniList. It scores 68%, a point under A Returner's Magic, and there is no time travel at all.

The do-over played for laughs: Tearmoon Empire

Tearmoon Empire key visual: a blond princess in a blue dress sits on a red throne, with a red-haired maid holding a tray and a young man in a green coat beside her Tearmoon Empire (cover via AniList).

Tearmoon Empire aired from October 8 to December 24, 2023, exactly the same weeks as A Returner's Magic Season 1, and both Reddit threads above name it. Princess Mia, Wikipedia says, was "executed through guillotine" at 20 and woke up "back in her 12-year-old body," next to her diary "covered in her blood." She uses what she remembers to rebuild the empire, and AniList's synopsis is clear about her motive: "Everything she does in this life is for the sake of avoiding the guillotine!"

It shares the structure of A Returner's Magic and none of its tone. The joke, in Wikipedia's words, is that her "supposedly selfish action" somehow "charms the people around her," and she turns old enemies into allies without meaning to. It is 12 episodes by Silver Link, scores 71% on AniList, and Muse Asia carries it on YouTube in parts of Asia.

The war she already lost: 7th Time Loop

7th Time Loop key visual: a pink-haired young woman in a cream gown stands in a grand hall, with a dark-haired prince on the staircase behind her and other nobles around 7th Time Loop (cover via AniList).

Rishe, per AniList's synopsis, "died at the age of 20 and returned to the moment five years prior when her engagement was called off," and has lived those five years six times already, "as a merchant, a doctor, a maid, a knight, and more." In the seventh she marries Arnold Hein, who Wikipedia calls "the man responsible for instigating the war in all of her previous lives." Like Desir, she knows the war is coming, and Wikipedia's premise has her working to "avert the war Arnold is fated to begin."

The difference is the genre. This is a romance first, and it is a seventh loop, not a first return, though the r/Animesuggest asker who wanted "just 1 regression" had it on the watched list. It ran 12 episodes from January 7 to March 24, 2024, by Studio Kai and Hornets, and its 75% is the best score on this list after Re:Zero. Our villainess anime guide ranks it with nine other shows if this one works for you.

The darker loop: Re:Zero

Re:Zero key visual: a black-haired boy in a tracksuit in the center, surrounded by a silver-haired half-elf, twin maids and other characters against a red crystal background Re:Zero (cover via AniList).

One of the r/anime replies was simply "Re Zero & Steins Gate," and it is the best-scored show here at 81% on AniList. Subaru, summoned to a fantasy world, finds that he goes back to an earlier point every time he dies, and AniList's synopsis adds the part that hurts: "only he remembers what has happened since." Season 1 is 25 episodes from April to September 2016 by White Fox, opening with an hour-long first episode, and Wikipedia lists a fourth season that aired from April to September 2026.

We are putting it last on purpose. The r/Animesuggest asker who had seen A Returner's Magic ruled it out by name, because it is many resets, not one return. A Returner's Magic gives Desir one second chance and a plan. Re:Zero makes Subaru pay for every attempt, and AniList's tags rate it 88% for Tragedy and 74% for Gore. Take it if you want the knowledge-of-the-future idea at its most painful.

Also suggested, not picked

AniList users also recommend Wise Man's Grandchild (14 votes), Chivalry of a Failed Knight (4) and The Asterisk War (2) on the A Returner's Magic page, and Reddit named The Do-Over Damsel Conquers the Dragon Emperor and Steins;Gate. We left them off this list of anime like A Returner's Magic Should Be Special because the six above already cover both hooks, the returner and the class split, between them: New Saga, The Irregular at Magic High School and Akashic Records come from the AniList votes, and Tearmoon Empire, 7th Time Loop and Re:Zero were named on Reddit. Wise Man's Grandchild has more votes than Akashic Records, 14 to 11, so it is the next one to try if you want another magic school.

Back to Season 2

The official site lists Season 2 on Fuji TV's +Ultra every Wednesday at 24:45 Japan time from October 7, 2026, which is 00:45 on Thursday, so AniList dates the premiere October 8. On AniList the new season sits at 70%, a point above Season 1, with about 34,000 users listing it as of November 4, and it links Crunchyroll. Our Season 2 guide has the release details. Our review and reading guide cover the finished manhwa, if you would rather jump ahead of the anime.

Fuji TV's own page for the show lists the next one, Season 2 #6 (Episode 18 if you count Season 1), for Wednesday, November 11 from 24:45 to 25:15, and the weekly slot on the official site puts #7 on November 18. A 24:45 slot is the first hour of Thursday in Japan but still Wednesday morning in New York and Wednesday afternoon in London, which is why Japanese and US listings can be a day apart. The official site adds that broadcast times can change. Crunchyroll's series page gives no clock time for its stream, so the table has Fuji TV's slot only:

Our pick

New Saga, and not because it is better. It scores lower than A Returner's Magic, and viewers who found Season 1 flat may find the same flatness there. But it is the only show on this list that copies the exact setup: a winner who lost everyone, sent back with a plan. If the class war is what you loved, skip it and go straight to The Irregular at Magic High School. If you only want a second chance to be fun for once, Tearmoon Empire.

How we checked this

Checked November 4, 2026: we watched Episode 1 of A Returner's Magic Should Be Special on Muse Asia's YouTube upload and logged each quoted subtitle with its timestamp, checking it against the Japanese captions. We read the AniList pages for both seasons and all six picks in a browser (recommendation counts, scores, tags, dates, streaming links), cross-checked episode counts, dates and studios on Wikipedia and the Crunchyroll series page, read the official anime site's broadcast page, and read the two Reddit threads quoted above. We have not watched the six picks; their descriptions come from the synopses and data cited.
